Fresh from onion broth 洋蔥湯染

To do natural dye, nothing is easier than onion.  A 3D vessel and a pair of baby shoes are fresh from the onion dye pot.
Other than wool batts, I felted the vessel with raw fleece while the shoes with little scraps of silk chiffon for textures.
Grabed some onion skins to boil for a while with little vinegar.
Bundled the  vessel and shoes tightly then put into the dye pot.  Simmered 30-min for the booties while the vessel an hour to get strong color.
Unbundled the shoes.....
and the vessel...... tight tie lines are what I wanted.

My sketch.....All white, alright and turn to bright.......  that's what I wanted.
Silk chiffon after dyed, a little brown then wool.
All the looks......

So, the longer and the more onion skins the stronger the color.
A pastel color can be achieved with little onion skins and only dipped a while in the dye pot.
Last blog for this dress dyeing.

  2. Love your soup! Once removed do the items retain the onion scent?

    1. Onion scent stays for sometime but you can wash and shape again the items.

  3. Do you mordant the wool at all, or just rely on the vinegar as a mordant? I save my onion skins all year and then dye yarn with them. I use an alum mordant and the color is much different from yours. It is a deep golden color. I love your color and now will have to try to do it with just vinegar!

  4. Kim, I didn't use mordant this time since I want dark brown. Yes only vinegar. Next time I'd add alum to get golden. I love golden.

Sabes.. yo he logrado el color verde y el dorado brillante con las cáscaras de cebolla, pero no he podido lograr éste color tan maravilloso. Probaré con el vinagre !! Gracias por compartir. Un saludo. Gloria

    1. Oh Gloria, sorry I can't catch your words. If you asked if I only added vinegar to make that color, yes it is.

  7. You sure have been busy. I can see that retirement has not slowed you down. Isn't it wonderful to be able to spend your days doing the things you really love to do? I like the idea to use natural dyes found in nature and also right in the garden or home cupboard. I do remember about onion skins and also using coffee and tea for dying and staining fabrics. I also believe you can cook the husks off of walnuts and that makes a dark dye. I know there are many more things, like Kool Aid for dying natural and white yarns. People might be amazed if they looked up all the things we can use for dying.

    1. Oh yes, Susanne. My new page just started. Everyday is of inspiration but one thing I've to think awhile when I wake up is : "what day is today? what's my schdeule today? " Without routine commuting to office, I mix up the days as my mum ! Just read your sweet comment which reminds my my outdated tea. I can stain on paper to make cards.
